Oskar Mitchell from Cowra in the central west of NSW is about to embark on his career in the Australian wool industry with AWI.

After a thorough selection process, Oskar was the successful applicant from a high calibre of graduates who applied for AWI’s 2024 Graduate Training Program.

The 18-month program will begin in March 2024.

AWI’s CEO John Roberts is thrilled to welcome Oskar to the AWI team and the AWI Graduate Program which provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the wool supply chain from fibre to fashion.

“Oskar is embarking on a program where he will experience all facets of the wool supply chain through 11 rotations across the business,” Mr Roberts said.

“Some of these rotations will include on-farm research, global marketing, processing, innovation through to consultation. Oskar will also gain a global exposure to pivotal markets in the wool supply chain through two international rotations where he will travel to Asia and Europe.”

Mr Roberts said the Graduate Program is part of AWI’s people resources program which is focused on cultivating talent in the industry as well as succession planning.

“Here at AWI, we are focussed on attracting and retaining talent to the wool industry and we see the Graduate Program as one of the mechanisms to future proof human resources in our business,” Mr Roberts said.

“The program focuses on graduates who can relate to the agricultural industry and who have a passion for wool, providing benefits to both AWI and the wider wool industry.”

Growing up on the family farm in Cowra, Oskar was exposed to all things sheep from an early age.

His passion for agriculture carried through to high school and onto university where he studied a Bachelor of Science/Advanced Studies – Agriculture, majoring in Animal Production and Resource Economics.

While completing his degree, Oskar worked on developing his professional growth, spending time working with Advantage Grain as a junior analyst, and more recently he has been completing an internship through the Tertiary Pathways program at Rabobank's Sydney Office.

AWI’s HR team said the standard of candidates that AWI received for the 2024 program was outstanding. One of the applicants, from Western Australia, who missed out on the Graduate Program, has since accepted a position in the research team and will start with AWI in November.
